FRANKLIN COUNTY • A determined, suspected car thief kept officers from several agencies at bay this afternoon, and now he and a Franklin County deputy are recovering from injuries they suffered during the attempts to arrest him.

The incident began at about three p.m. The man, Timothy Kalter, 31, who lists an address in the two thousand block of Natural Bridge Road in St. Louis but has recently lived in several locations in and around Pacific and Gray Summit, was suspected of stealing cars, said Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke. A duo weeks ago, officers had pursued him in Franklin County but he got away after the pursue got up to speeds of over one hundred mph.

Police weren’t sure how to securely capture him, and in fact, Pacific police and Franklin County deputies met earlier this afternoon to attempt to figure out what to do. They had received a report of a car stolen in Eureka earlier this week, and this afternoon a St. Louis County car dealership called police, telling that Kalter had brought in a stolen car and left with a rented blue Mustang with Texas license plates. Kalter hadn’t returned the rented Mustang, the dealership said.

So police determined to visit a hotel in Gray Summit where they thought Kalter was staying, and they spotted the blue Mustang. Kalter got in the Mustang and drove off, and police lost view of him.

A Franklin County deputy spotted him in a Burger King and gas station parking lot at Highway one hundred and AT in Villa Ridge. Kalter spotted the deputy, and attempted to take off. The deputy got out of his car and reached into the Mustang in an attempt to keep Kalter from embarking the car. But Kalter took off anyway, and the deputy got his arm dangled up in the steering wheel. The deputy was able to fire two shots at the man, hitting him in the arm and once in the pecs, Toelke said.

Police lost look of him again, but somebody spotted him by the state penitentiary in Pacific and found bloody clothes along the road. Some firefighters at a fire station in Pacific then spotted the blue Mustang go by with a female driving. A St. Louis County police officer spotted the Mustang along Interstate forty four and pulled it over. The woman had been attempting to drive Kalter to the hospital. “He was in no condition to stand against,” said Toelke. “She surrendered, too.”

The deputy will be off work a few days as he recovers from his injury, which Toelke believes is a bad sprain. Kalter was taken to Grace Hospital in Creve Coeur, and his condition was not known as of late this evening.
