Supercars: 12-car crash brings out crimson flags in Race Three

12-car crash stops Race Three

A total of twelve cars were left a smouldering, crumpled mess on the run to the Turn four hairpin after the cars of Garth Tander and Cam Waters tangled.

Tander’s spinning car tagged Rick Kelly into a spin with the field behind them defenselessly plunging into the mess, most blinded by bust from rain prior to the race.

WHO WAS INVOLVED?

In total, twelve cars were involved in the crash on Lap two of Race Trio.

It is the largest multi-car Supercars crash since a nine-car pileup on the opening lap of Race two at the Sandown round in 1998, while a first-lap smash at Hidden Valley in two thousand thirteen claimed seven cars.

Drivers with cars left bruised by the mess included:

– Simona De Silvestro

“I’ve never seen an accident this big that’s taken out so many cars in one area,” FOX SPORTS’s Supercars commentator Russell Ingall said.

“There’s cars there that will not come back this weekend; they’re over and out. There’s some cars that will be patched up and be out tomorrow.”

De Silvestro was able to drive her Nissan back to the pits where it was repaired in time for her to take part in the restart, while Percat attempted to drive his Holden back but stopped when a coolant pressure warning light flashed up.

DAVISON TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

Remarkably, Will Davison was the only driver to suffer any injuries, his influence appearing to be one of the hardest.

He slammed into the passenger’s side front door of Kelly’s Nissan at some 120km/h after attempting to thread the needle through the crashing cars.

Davison was subsequently taken to hospital in Launceston reporting lower back agony, as well as being intensely winded by the influence.

“Definitely the thickest hit I’ve had in sixteen years of racing Supercars,” Kelly said.

What triggered twelve car crash

WHAT TRIGGERED THE CRASH?

With most of the participants blinded by splatter, no driver seemed totally sure of what actually happened.

Replays demonstrate Fabian Coulthard and Rick Kelly – battling for 11th place – colliding on the exit of Turn Trio, the Nissan clouting the armco strongly on its left-hand side.

“I got run straight into the fence,” Kelly said. Not sure if (Coulthard) got bumped or had someone alongside him.”

Coulthard said his DJR Team Penske Falcon – which sustained harm to the left side but carried on – simply slipped out from under him in the slick conditions.

“There was a battle from (Turn) six with Dale and Todd Kelly. There was a pack of four of us sliding over the crest into (Turn) 1,” Coulthard explained.

“I came through Turn three and it has a big slide on me – and Rick’s there. We’ve got 650-odd horsepower and you’re attempting to put that to the ground on a raw track.”

The dust-up caused both cars to slow. While the cars instantaneously behind them – including Tander – slowed in response, those behind were unsighted due to squirt and didn’t see the mess embark to unfold.

“I could see something was happening with Coulthard and Waters was involved. I attempted to stay out of it and someone came and hit me in the rear,” Tander said.

“It looks as tho’ Cam (Waters) got me from behind but I am not going to blame anyone. It was stacks on.”

Car after car piled into the mess. A lane opened up on the left-side of the circuit – one which both Davison and Douglas headed down, only to find the cars of Kelly and Courtney respectively slide into their paths.

Eventually, SOME LUCK FOR THE UNLUCKIEST TEAM

That one car was Lee Holdsworth!

The freshly rebuilt Preston Hire Commodore miraculously avoided the smash – and not just the one happening in front of him.

“I witnessed it all going on ahead of me,” Holdsworth said. “Obviously some blokes witnessed it as an chance to pass a heap of cars.

“I eyed Rick sideways across the track, so I leaped off the throttle and attempted to avoid everything.

“The next thing I know I’m attempting avoid the guys behind me because they’re at total noise! So I’m dodging them and attempting to find gaps behind.

“I pulled up brief of it all, and fortunately the guys that were behind didn’t run into the back of me and we got away scot-free.”

OVER $Five MILLION OF SUPERCARS INVOLVED

Several teams were wiped out entirely by the crash.

Both Garry Rogers Motorsport Holdens, both Mobil one HSV Racing cars, both Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport cars and two of the four Nissan Motorsport cars were also caught up.

“I think that’s the last we’ll ever see of (Kelly’s) car based on what we’ve seen there,” Nissan Motorsport team manager Scott Sinclair said.

All three Brad Jones Racing Holdens were involved, bringing their tally of badly bruised cars to five for the day.

In a twist of fate, two of their three Dunlop Super2 Series cars were caught up in a major crash at the same spot on the opening lap of their 2nd race of the weekend.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. I haven’t had a look at Timmy Blanchards car yet but it most likely looked the worst from the outside,” Brad Jones said.

“Hopefully we can get the (Supercars championship) cars back on the track tomorrow but I don’t think there’ll be much sleep.”

Kelly’s, Courtney’s and Douglas’ cars have already been officially ruled out of activity for Sunday, while it seems unlikely Davison’s will be repaired in time even if he is ruled medically fit to take part.

INGALL: THEY NEED TO BE GIVEN A KICK UP THE BACKSIDE

The Enforcer had some harsh words for the drivers Holdsworth alluded to – the ones who ploughed into the back of the crash well after it had already embarked.

“There was some average driving up the back,” Ingall said.

“There were a duo of driver there that came through when the accident had already happened and cleaned up James (Courtney).

“They need to be hauled up and given a kick up the backside.”
