A high-speed police pursue ended in a deadly crash that involved six cars on Friday afternoon.
Guadalupe County Sheriff’s deputies were pursuing a pair of burglary suspects when the crash happened just after noon at the intersection of FM seventy eight and FM three thousand nine — killing one of the suspects and injuring the 2nd, as well as two other people, Sheriff Arnold Zwicke said.
The incident began after a witness reported watching a vehicle burglarized at a Fresh Braunfels restaurant on FM 725, Zwicke said.
“They followed the vehicle and called 9-1-1,” he said.
A deputy spotted the suspect’s vehicle at FM one thousand forty four and FM 78. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off heading west on FM seventy eight and traveling at speeds up to one hundred MPH, Zwicke said.
“The pursuit went west on FM seventy eight through Marion and into Cibolo,” he said. “At three thousand nine and 78, the (fleeing) vehicle hit an 18-wheeler that was turning and (the car) went into oncoming traffic.”
The collision involved four extra vehicles.
One of the fleeing vehicle’s occupants was killed, while the 2nd was injured and taken by EMS to a nearby hospital, Zwicke said.
Two other people were reportedly injured in the multi-car collision, but were not believed to have life-threatening injuries, Zwicke said.
None of those involved in the incident have been identified at this time.
The deputy was not involved in the wreck.
The surviving suspect is facing charges of burglary of a vehicle and felony evading arrest. Other possible charges are pending, Zwicke said.
The wreck is under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, while Fresh Braunfels Police Department is investigating the vehicle burglary.
